Panic as herdsmen kill farmer in Enugu, destroy crops

Fulani herdsmen reportedly killed a farmer identified as Amodu in Okutu, Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area of Enugu State.

Community sources said the farmer was stabbed to death by the herders on Friday after an altercation with ensured between them and the farmer for grazing their cattle in his farm.

Okutu is a boundary town between Enugu and Kogi States.

The sources said that youths from the community mobilised to attack the herders but they quickly fled with their cattle into the Kogi side.

A youth leader, Onuchu Ikedi said that the killing created tension between Okutu and the neighbouring Odoru community in Kogi.

He added that the Odoru police command intervened with the Kogi State vigilante service and arrested the alleged owner of the cows identified as Useni.

He said that they’re monitoring the development to ensure that justice is served.

Meanwhile, there was a clash between herders and a vigilante group in Opi, Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State leading to the death of a herder.

Standardobservers gathered that the vigilante operatives who are members of the Enugu State forest guard intercepted the herders while they were destroying crops with their cattle leading to the clash.

Community sources told our correspondent that one herder slumped and died while running from being captured by the vigilante operatives.

They said that the herder was later buried at Obolo in Igbo-North after his associates were called in to evacuate his remains.
