Some officers of the Rivers State Command of the Nigeria Police on Wednesday took to the streets of Port Harcourt in protest over the demolition of their apartments at the Miniokoro Police Barracks, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of the state.
It was learnt that the officers were forcefully evicted from the barracks, which served as their residence.
Some affected persons, said the decision was not proper as they were not given enough information before the demolition took place.
Confirming the development, spokesperson of the state command, DSP Grace Iringe-Koko, said the police were in the move to recover their property from illegal occupants in line with the decision of the Police management team.
According to her, “The command is aware of the demolition exercise. Those people are illegal occupants they do not have their C of O. If they have they should come and prove that they have.
Iringe-Koko noted that the land belonged to the Nigeria Police and the force is destroying shanties and illegal structures in the barracks.
“The police management agreed on the action because there are some persons in the Barracks that are of questionable characters, so they decided to demolish shanties and illegal structures in the Barracks. It is internal restructuring that is ongoing within the police,” she added
