IDP camps not campaign ground- Rivers council chairman warns parties

Chairman of Ahoada West local council in Rivers State, Hope  Ikiriko, has warned that the Internally Displaced Persons Camps (IDPs) established by the council  for the victims of the 2022 flood should  not be turned into a campaign ground for political parties and individuals affiliated to political parties.

The council chairman in a statement said only  those who are henuinely sympathetic to the plights of the people should go to the camps.

“For whatsoever reason that maybe advanced should flood IDP camps be used as campaign ground or sharing of campaign materials to the vulnerable persons apart from the primary purpose of catering for the victims,” he said.

He further emphasized that on no account should political activities or campaign be conducted by individuals, groups or political parties in any IDP camp meant for the flood victims of Ahoada West either within or outside the local government area.

Ikiriko, however, called on the security agencies to arrest and prosecute any individual or group of individuals found guilty of this act.

While calling on government at all levels, spirited individuals, non-governmental organizations for support, the chairman reiterated that the issue on ground is a sorrowful one that requires proper care and attention to the victims, especially as the council is doing its part to rescue, provide relief materials and healthcare to the victims.
