#EndSARS: Two years after, Rivers, others yet to compensate victims of police brutality

Nigerian youths have marked the 2nd anniversary of the Lekki toll gate #EndSARS massacre.

The #EndSARS protests was a campaign by Nigerian youths, calling for the reformation of the Nigerian Police and the disbandment of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Nigeria Police Force.

On 20th October, 2020, the world witnessed what has been referred to as the #LekkiMassacre as security forces allegedly shot the #EndSARS protesters and killing over 40 youths in the process.

Government has however, continued to deny that no one was killed at the toll gate.

Meanwhile, human rights lawyer, Abdul Mahmud has decried the failure of panels set up to investigate the atrocities of the police unit in most states of the federation.

According to him, Taraba, Bauchi, and Ogun states have not released reports on the findings of the investigative panels.

He noted that while states like Adamawa, AkwaIbom, Bayelsa, Benue, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, Ekiti, Enugu, Gombe, Kaduna, Katsina, Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa, Ondo, Osun, Anambra & Plateau have released reports, they have, however, failed to release white paper of the report.

He said Lagos and Rivers have released both report and white paper while Yobe, Borno, Jigawa, Kano, Kebbi, Sokoto and Zamfara did not constitute investigative panels.

Mahmud also explained that the National Human Rights Commission has not issued a white paper on the report submitted by FCT ENDSARS Panel.

“VP @ProfOsinbajo has since gone to sleep, having sat on the National Economic Council that directed states to set up judicial panels on Endsars

“States that have paid compensation to victims are Lagos State, N420m; Osun State N53.2m and Ekiti State N21.25m.

“Let it be noted that the Rivers moneybag hasn’t paid a dime out; but he keeps throwing money everywhere and anywhere. The FGN through the NHRC hasn’t paid a dime.

“So much of the promises of the Pastor in 2020”
