2023: Britain, Rivers govt to strengthen cooperation for free, fair elections

The British Government says it is committed to ensuring a free fair and credible election come 2023 in Nigeria.

Accordingly, it is partnering with the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC to ensure the realisation of a smooth election in the country.

The Political Counsellor, British High Commission in Nigeria, Jonathan Bacon disclosed this on Monday evening while speaking to journalists after a closed door meeting with the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike at his country home, in Rumueiprikom, Obio-Akpor Local Government Area.

Beacon, who led other officials of the British Commission on the visit, described the meeting with Governor Wike as very productive.

He noted that the British government is always monitoring the situation in Nigeria ahead of the 2023 elections.

“We discussed the electoral period looking ahead to 2023 and I reiterated the British government’s position that we are supporting the process”

“We are also working very closely with INEC and we’re hoping for a free, fair and credible election in 2023.” he asserted.

He stated that the meeting with the governor also centred on how to cement the existing relationship between the United Kingdom, Nigeria and Rivers State.

“The British High Commission Team from Abuja has come to River State today for a number of meetings. We had a meeting just now with His Excellency, the Governor of River State. We discussed how we could further strengthen cooperation between the UK and Nigeria and the UK Rivers State”, he noted.
