64TH INDEPENDENCE DAY MESSAGE TO RIVERS PEOPLE

Dear Rivers Youth and People,

As we celebrate Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day today, October 1st, 2024, we reflect on our journey as a state. This day is a reminder of our collective strength, resilience, and the enduring spirit of our people.

We cannot forget the tragic events of October 30th, 2023, when our beloved Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, GSSRS was subjected to teargas, hot water, and gunfire by rogue police officers acting under the influence of undemocratic forces. These elements, who do not believe in the principles of independence, sought to undermine our state’s autonomy and impose their will upon us. However, their attempts were met with vehement resistance from the courageous people of Rivers State.

As we honor Nigeria’s independence, let us also recognize the ongoing struggle for the true independence of Rivers State. This battle is not solely the responsibility of Governor Fubara; it is a collective fight for all of us. We must stand united against those who seek to exploit our resources and jeopardize our future for their selfish gains.

In the spirit of independence, I urge every Rivers citizen, especially the youth, to take this fight personally. Our future depends on our determination to free ourselves from internal colonialists who wish to mortgage our destiny. Let us remain vigilant and committed to safeguarding the soul of Rivers State.

Mark your calendars for October 30th, a day that symbolizes our true independence. Together, we will continue to resist oppression and strive for a prosperous and autonomous Rivers State.

Happy Independence Day, Rivers youth and people!

Yours in solidarity,

Engr. (Dr.) Legborsi Yamaabana, MNSE
Chairman, Rivers State Ethnic Youth Leaders Coalition
