‎INEC Fixes Date for Bye-Elections into two Vacant Seats in Rivers Assembly

‎The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has scheduled bye-elections for the Ahoada East II and Khana II State Constituencies in Rivers State on February 21, 2026.‎‎

The decision was approved during an extraordinary meeting held on Monday, where the Commission also reviewed preparations for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections, set for the same date.‎‎

Under Section 116 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), INEC is empowered to conduct bye-elections to fill vacancies in state assemblies.

The Ahoada East II seat became vacant following the resignation of its former member, while the Khana II seat was vacated due to the death of its representative.

The Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly has formally notified INEC of both vacancies.‎‎

Timetable and Schedule of Activities:‎- Notice of Election: Published on January 22, 2026‎‎- Conduct of Party Primaries(including resolution of disputes): January 23–27, 2026‎‎- Public Campaigns by Parties and Candidates: Commence on February 8, 2026, and end on February 19, 2026‎‎- Election Day: February 21, 2026.
