Opobo Kingdom in Rivers State will on September 26, 2026, crown
His Majesty, King Charles Douglas MacPepple Jaja, Jeki VI, as the sixth Amanyanabo of the kingdom.
King Charles Douglas MacPepple Jaja was in December 2025 elected as the new Amanyanabo following the demise of the former occupant, Dr. Dandeson Douglas Jaja.
Addressing a press conference in Port Harcourt, Alabo Princewill Dappa, Vice Chairman of Opobo Council of Alapu, said all preparations have been put in place to mark the historic moment in the annals of the kingdom.
He said the coronation activities will culminate in the grand coronation on Saturday, September 26, 2026, in Opobo Town.
Desceibing it as a significant moment in the history of the kingdom, Dappa noted that the throne of King Jaja of Opobo is one of the most historic traditional institutions in the Niger Delta, with a legacy deeply associated with the courage, enterprise, diplomacy and leadership of King Jaja of Opobo. He added that the coronation of Jeki VI marks the continuation of an enduring institution and the opening of a new chapter in the life of the Kingdom.
He said the Opobo Council Chiefs had undertaken a number of important diplomatic and traditional visits, including visits to respected national leaders such as former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. These engagements he said have helped to strengthen historic relationships and convey formal invitations to the coronation.
Dappa said: “On Saturday, September 26, 2026, Opobo will witness another defining moment in its history as His Majesty, King Charles Douglas MacPepple Jaja, Jeki VI, is formally crowned.
”The coronation itself will showcase the rich heritage, traditional institutions, culture and history of Opobo. It will also provide an opportunity for our people at home and in the diaspora to come together in unity around the throne and the future of the Kingdom.
”We therefore invite the people of Rivers State, Nigerians, friends of Opobo and the international community to join us in celebrating this historic occasion. We particularly appeal to the media to help tell the wider story of Opobo. It is a story of heritage, resilience, leadership, enterprise and continuity,” he added.
The Opobo chief further assured of adequate security measures in and around the kingdom during the period, while also urging guests from within and outside the kingdom to adhere strictly to all laid down security,traffic and protocol measures.
