APC yields to Court Order, cancel congresses in Rivers State

By: Felix Ikpotor

The All Progressives Congress in Rivers State has complied with the court order barring it from conducting congresses in the state.

To this end, the party has cancelled its ward, local government and state congresses scheduled to start on Tuesday.

The party’s factional State Publicity Secretary, Mr. Chris Finebone,  in a statement on Monday , said that the congresses were put on hold as a result of the court order that restrained the party from holding the exercise.

PHSpectator reports that the National Working Committee, NWC, of the party had on September 9th, inaugurated a 5-member Caretaker Committee to oversee the party’s Congresses.

But,  some chieftains of the party, including the immediate past Senator representing Rivers South-East Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Magnus Abe, objected to the constitution of the committee.

Abe and others had argued that members of the committee did not reflect the diversity in the party.

However, last week Thursday, a Rivers State High Court ordered the party to return to status quo.

The court also ordered the party to refrain from conducting its ward, local and state congresses, pending the hearing and determination of a suit marked PHC/3098/19 filed by Ibrahim Umah and 22 others.

Finebone said that the congresses would not hold because the APC would not defy the court order.
