MOSOP condemn detention of President

A faction of the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People, MOSOP has condemned the detention of its President, Fegalo Nsuke by Nigerian security forces on January 2, 2020.

MOSOP in a release made available to this publication and signed by the Assistant General Secretary, Alex Akori described the detention of its Nsuke as provocative, regrettable and a setback on the progress made by the Ogoni people to recover from the persecution of the Nigerian state.

In a statement issued at the end of an executive committee meeting presided over by the deputy president, Bartholomew Oluji, the Nsuke led faction of MOSOP said the arrest was a reminder of the past where the Nigerian security forces were instigated against the genuine and peaceful struggles of the Ogoni people.

The statement which stated that the recent attacks against the leadership of MOSOP was masterminded by mischief makers to throw Ogoni into confusion, said Nsuke’s detention was an attempt to replicate what they did to Ken Saro-Wiwa in 1995.

While commending the Ogoni people for their peaceful disposition during the period of Nsuke’s incarceration the statement rejected calls for oil resumption in Ogoni stressing that it was “not in the best interest of the Ogoni people” at this time.

They noted that oil resumption can only commence with adequate negotiations and after previous oil spills have been cleaned up.

The statement further urged all Ogonis to promote peace in their domains and condemned attempts by a few to create divisions in Ogoni.

MOSOP described the frequent interference of KAGOTE in the internal affairs of MOSOP as mischievous and overstepping their bounds. It said KAGOTE’s recent actions were unacceptable and regrettable.
