Ahead of the proposed nationwide protest slated for June 12, the Inspector General of Police, Alkali Baba Ahmad, has issued a new directive to Zonal Assistant Inspectors General of Police and Commissioners of Police in states and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT.
The IGP directed the Commissioners to deal firmly with any person or group who may want to highjack the June 12 nationwide protest to foment trouble in the country.
Alkali, who gave the directive during a meeting with strategic commanders of the Nigeria Police Force in Abuja, urged them to remain civil with law-abiding citizens during the Democracy Day celebration.
Meanwhile, the IGP said he has been receiving reports that some Commissioners of Police still allow mounting roadblocks in their jurisdictions.
He warned that roadblocks under any description or guise remain banned across the country, adding that any officer found to be contravening the roadblock order will be held liable and dealt with firmly.
A former presidential candidate and activist, Soware Omoyele, had charged his followers and other Nigerians to partake in the June 12 nationwide protest.
Sowore described the forthcoming protest as a decisively unstoppable struggle to end the tyranny, cruelty and impunity of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration.
