Ogonis protest creation of another Polytechnic in Rivers

By: Felix Ikpotor

Barely a day after the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike sent a bill to the Rivers State House of Assembly, RVHA, seeking to upgrade the Rivers State College of Arts and Science, RIVCAS to a polytechnic, some Ogonis have protested the move by the state governor.

The group under the aegis of Ken Saro-Wiwa Associates expressed fear that the creation of another polytechnic in the state would lead to neglect of the Ken Saro Wiwa Polytechnic in Bori.

Coordinator of the group, Mr. Gani Topba called on “the governor and the assembly to disregard the bill as it will by principle cause the abandonment of the only polytechnic in the Ogoni area”

It would be recalled that Nyesom Wike had on Tuesday moved to make the Rivers State College of Arts and Science, RIVCAS a polytechnic.

This is even as the governor sent a bill to the Rivers State House of Assembly, RVHA, to that effect.

Presenting the bill in plenary on Tuesday, leader of government business in the house, Martins Amaewhule said the bill (Port Harcourt Polytechnic Bill 2016, HA4) when passed into law would transfer the assets, staff and liabilities of RIVCAS to the Port Harcourt Polytechnic.

Basically, the law seeks to change the nomenclature of the school from its former name to the new one.

It would be recalled that the state government had earlier changed the name of the state owned former Rivers State Polytechnic, Bori to Kenule Beeson Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic, Bori.
