Rivers State Police Command said it has banned the use of sirens, revolving lights and covered number plates by unauthorised persons in the state.
The State Commissioner of Police, Friday Eboka, who disclosed this in a statement issued in Port Harcourt, yesterday, said such facilities were being used to commit crimes in the state.
The statement, which was signed by the command’s spokesman, SP Nnamdi Omoni, also banned the use of spies, and urged those using the facilities to dismantle them within seven days or be ready to face the law.
The statement read, “It has been observed that criminals and other unauthorised persons are using sirens, revolving lights, spy and covered plate numbers to commit crimes and other atrocities in the state.
“In view of these disturbing developments and sequel to the earlier directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Alkali Baba Usman, on the abuse and indiscriminate use of sirens, revolving lights, spy and covered plate numbers without appropriate approvals, the Commissioner of Police, Rivers State Police Command, has with immediate effect banned the use of these facilities in the state.
“Against the background of the above, the CP wishes to inform the general public that a taskforce has been set up to ensure full compliance.
“In the light of the above, therefore, the public and particularly those with these facilities are enjoined to dismantle them, with the grace of one week to do so, as no efforts will be spared in dealing with the violators of this clear and unambiguous directive.
“The Commissioner of Police Rivers State command, CP Eboka Friday, is hereby appealing to the residents of the state, particularly banks, companies, private individuals and security personnel, except those on covert operations, to show understanding by complying with the above directive or face prosecution.
“The Task Force headed by the Commander Operation Sting, ACP Jephthah Nengi, has been given the marching order to enforce compliance.”
