Efforts are currently ongoing to rescue the remains of yet-to-be-known expatriates whose vehicle plunged into the Aleto bridge on the Eleme axis of the East West Road in Rivers State.
Eyewitnesses say the incident occurred Monday evening while the vehicle carrying the expatriates were attempting to escape from an ambush by a gang of suspected kidnappers.
The eyewitnesses said chairman of Eleme council, Brain Gokpa, immediately mobilised security personnel to the area after the incident occurred.
Also, the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adewale alongside officials of the Rivers State Government have visited the scene this morning to ascertain the cause of the incident.
In the meantime, professional diver engaged to search for their remains have recovered a Hilux vehicle and one person from the river.
Port Harcourt Spectator reports that the Aleto bridge has over the years been a death trap to motorist plying the road.
Also, the deplorable nature of the road has made journeying on that part of the road a serious risk for travellers.
