Senator Magnus Ngei Abe, All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for Rivers South East Senatorial District in the about-to-be concluded legislative re-run election, has visited Kpoghor community in Tai Local Government Area sacked by gunmen believed to have come from a neighbouring Wakama community in Ogu Bolo Local Government Area on June 24, where he donated relief materials to the victims.
Speaking while on a visit to assess the situation and sympathize with the community,Abe described the situation as horrific and reminiscence of Boko Haram attacks in the North, where the people fled into IDP camps.
He, therefore, appealed to the Rivers state government to assist the people who are now refugees in a neighbouring BoroBara community in Tai local government area.
Abe said that efforts should be made by the authorities to avert this kind of destruction on defenseless citizens in Rivers State.
He said the site he saw where there was no sign of life including animals, and property, reminded one of a war zone.
The former Secretary to the Rivers State Government alerted the nation that there was an Internally Displaced Persons camp in Rivers State but nobody knew about it.
He appealed to necessary agencies that attend to IDPs to come to the rescue of the Kpoghor people.
Abe promised on a personal level to contact his friends from Okrika including leaders of Ogoni to help mediate into the crisis and find a lasting solution to the attack.
“I will reach out to friends in Okrika. We will make our own individual effort to try to create an atmosphere that will help to bring peace. But it is the government that has the instrument that can be able to return peace to this area and bring the people back to their community. Like I said,I will talk to my friends from Okrika and also get some of the leaders in Ogoni,Tai LGA to interface so that we can quickly return this people to their homes and stop this attack. This is totally unacceptable in 21st century”, he said.
He appealed to the people of Kpoghor community not to take the laws into their hands by retaliating.
Speaking in pigin, he said: “Person wey no get brother and sister,e get God and we will pray to God our father to touch the heart of people make dem help us. So, I just come to let una know say Nigeria go hear wetin dey happen to una. I hear say as una dey here, there is no food, nowhere to sleep, no blanket, the children dey sick. All sorts of suffer nai una dey see because una no fit go farm. We dey talk about IDPs for North say Boko Haram don pursue them, we get IDPs here for Rivers State. We must put a stop”
Items donated to the victims were blankets, bags of rice, cartons of instant garri mix, plastic buckets, mattresses and gerry cans.
Receiving the items on behalf of the community, the CDC chairman, Mr. Joseph Agboto Nmaue, thanked Senator Magnus Abe for his identification and support for the plight of the community and assured him of judicious use of the items.
