Ignatius Ajuru University Amendment Bill passed into law

By: Felix Ikpotor

The Ignatius Ajuru University of Education Amendment Bill, 2016 has been passed into law by the Rivers State House of Assembly, RVHA.

The executive bill was presented on the floor of the House by the leader, Martin Chike Amaewhule.

The passage of the bill followed the presentation of the report of the House Standing Committee on Education led by  Martin Chike Amaewhule.

Amaewhule in his presentation said the committee organised a public hearing where stakeholders were allowed to make inputs into the bill.

The Committee in its report recommended that the retirement age for professors in the school be increased from the present 65 years as obtained in the principal law to 70 years.

They also recommended that any person to be appointed Vice Chancellor of the school should be a professor from any other field rather than education with a track record of academic excellence but must be a professor of not less than 10 years professorial experience.

Debating on the report, lawmakers representing Emohua Constituency, Hon. Sam Ogeh and Nathaniel Uwaji representing Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni constituency 2 argued that the 10 years professorial experience for anybody to be appointed VC should be expunge in other not to discriminate against future appointees.

However, their argument held no water as the House dissolved into a committee of the whole and there after passed the bill into law.

The speaker, Rt. Hon. Dabotorudima Adams while passing the bill into law directed the clerk of the house to pass the resolution of the house and a copy of the amended bill to the governor.
