RVHA: Power failure stalls budget debate

By: Felix Ikpotor

The Rivers State House of Assembly, RVHA, was prevented from sitting Thursday, due to power failure at the assembly complex located along Moscow Road, Port Harcourt, the state capital.

The house was supposed to commence debate on the 2018 budget presented last Thursday by the State governor, Chief Nyesom Wike.

Wike had last week presented a budget proposal of N510 billion naira for the 2018 fiscal year.

The assembly had on Tuesday adjourned debate on the budget to Thursday.

Our reporter who was at the assembly said the lawmakers arrived early in their   numbers for the day’s business but they could not as the assembly was in total blackout.

Earlier, it was learnt that repair work was ongoing on the power plant at the assembly and that power would be restored shortly, but after a long wait, at about 12: 40pm the lawmakers dispatched from the hallowed chambers to their offices and some to their homes without uttering a word to anybody .

We gathered that this is not the first time power supply would stop the lawmakers from carrying out their legislative duties, adding that it had been happening in the past.
