Rivers Government calls for independent investigation into attack on soldiers

By: Emmanuel Nlewedum

Rivers State Government is now calling for an independent international investigation into the killing of two soldiers on patrol in Degema Local Government Area.

The State’s Information and Communication Commissioner, Dr Austin Tam-George, who made the call in a statement, alleged that cultists working for the All Progressives Congress, APC, committed the murder.

Dr Tam-George said: “The Government and people of Rivers State are saddened by the unfortunate killing of the officer and the soldier. We call for an independent international investigation to ascertain those behind the killings.

“However, we strongly believe that APC sponsored cultists may be behind the killing of these soldiers in their ugly plot to pitch innocent Rivers communities against the military. ”

Tam-George said utterances of APC leaders and their relationship with cultists across the state indicated that they were sponsors of violence across the state.

He further commiserated with the families of the deceased and the military high command over the killings.

Earlier, the APC in the state had accused the state governor, Chief Nyesom Wike and the PDP of arming youths for the elections.

The party had consistently said that Wike’s utterances to members of his party to resist arrest and to defend their votes by all means may have contributed to the incidence.
