Rivers govt warns youths against instigating communal crisis

Rivers State Government has advised Community Leaders and Youths in the State to refrain from utterances and actions that may spark up communal crises in the State.

The State Deputy Governor, Dr. Ipalibo Harry Banigo gave the advice while addressing representatives of Korokoro Community in Tai Local Government Area and Afam-Ukwu in Oyigbo Local Government Area in the State during a fact finding tour of the disputed boundary involving the two communities.

Represented by a member of the Rivers State Boundary Committee, Chief Silas Eneyo, Dr. Banigo urged the two neigbouring communities to continue to embrace dialogue and amicable resolution of boundary issues affecting them rather than take the laws into their hands in order not to undermine the prevailing peaceful atmosphere in the State.

The Deputy Governor who is also Chairman of the Rivers State Boundary Committee reminded the people of the pains and untold hardship associated with communal clashes and warned that the State Government would invoke the full wrath of the Law on any individual or group found fermenting trouble.

Earlier, the Representatives of Korokoro Tai, Chief Francis Dan-Abosi and Afam-Ukwu, Onwuka Cleopas said the boundary dispute began since 1918 and appealed to the Rivers State Government to do everything humanly possible to resolve the issue amicably to enable them live in peace with one another.

Other members of the State Boundary Committee that were on the delegation to the disputed area include Mr. Dan Oruwari, Director Publications, representing the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Mr. Collins Lebechi representing the Director State Security Service and Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of SOS, Mr. Ubani Romokere representing the State Commissioner of Police.
