Cultists kill Rivers policeman

A policeman has reportedly lost his life in an attack that left over 20 cars and five houses destroyed at Rex Lawson street in Borikiri Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

The corpse of the policeman we have learnt was taken away by the unknown men, but was later recovered by the state police command.

Confirming the incident, the state police spokesman, DSP Nnamdi Omoni said: “Members of the islanders cult group were attacking innocent people, themselves and their rival cult groups.

“So, while that was going on, our men were drafted to that area and they swiftly responded to the distress call.

“Unfortunately, on sighting the police, they shot one of our men and even took his corpse.

“Our gallant men stopped them and were later able to recover the corpse.

“The Police have set up an investigation to get to the bottom of the matter,” the police image maker said.

Meanwhile, residents of the community are still counting their losses following the attack.

Many of the victims have accused men of the police anti-cultism department of being behind the attack, alleging that the policemen came on retaliation after one of them was shot by unknown men brutalizing and vandalizing properties in the area.

They also accussed the police of carrying out mass arrest after the incidence as many innocent  residents are now in police custody.

But the spokesperson denied the allegation saying men of the command were only caught in crossfire during a clash between rival cult groups in the area.
