Super Eagles get N24million despite WAFU Cup final loss

The home-based Super Eagles received a total of $65,000 (about N24million), despite losing 4-1 to Ghana, in the final of this year’s West African Football Union (WAFU) Cup on Sunday.

The Black Stars were paid the ultimate star prize of $100,000 (about N36million) offered by FOX Sports, sponsors of the two-week WAFU Cup tournament.

A breakdown of the prize money, shows that the first place prize was $100,000 while the runners-up prize was $50,000.

Niger Republic that defeated Benin Republic 2-1 got the third-placed prize of $25,000 while the Squirrels of Benin got $10,000 as the fourth place finished team.

 Addition to the prizes for the final and the losers’ final, all teams got participation fees of $15,000 each.

The four semi-final losing teams were paid $10,000 each, while the four second-round losers were consoled with $5,000 each.

Meanwhile, Head coach of the Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr, has released his list of 23 players that will prosecute the game against Zambia next week, in a 2018 World Cup qualifier in Uyo.

Some of the big names on the list are Captain John Mikel Obi, Odion Ighalo, Alex Iwobi.

Portugal-based goalkeeper Dele Alampasu, wing back Tyronne Ebuehi  were missing from the list.

The list comprises the same set of players who got four points off Cameroon during the last international week.

All invited players are to be in Uyo on Monday, October 2, 2017.
