Wike tasks media to help in tackling insecurity

Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, has charged the media to join in working out ways to tackle the problem of insecurity threatening the existence of the country.

Governor Wike gave the charge during the opening ceremony of a three-day National Conference of the Nigeria Union of Journalists holding at the Obi Wali International Conference Center Port Harcourt with the theme “the media, insecurity and national unity”

The governor who was represented by the deputy governor Dr Ipalibo Harry-Banigo also noted that the media as an integral part of governance should proffer solutions to the numerous challenges facing the country and encouraged good governance.

The Governor commended the leadership of the NUJ for recognising his contributions to the development of democracy and service to humanity through his induction into the NUJ Integrity Hall of Fame.

Also speaking, his Abia State counterpart Dr Okezie Ikpeazu commended the courage of the media in shaping the society and for organising the conference at this critical time, urging them to continue to maintain the role model status.

In his speech, Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed represented by the Zonal Director, Federal Ministry of Information called on the media to take advantage of the conference to address critical issues confronting the nation.

The chairman of the occasion O.C.J Okocha, SAN, commended the leadership of the NUJ for organising the conference at a time the country is at a crossroad, noting that the theme of the conference “the media, insecurity and national unity was apt.
