Rivers: Council seal Aleto sandfield over pollution

The authority of Eleme Local Government Council in Rivers State has ordered  the sealing up of some sections of the Aleto sandfield in the area.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the council, Ate Chinwi, said the order is to be enforced with immediate effect.

He explained that the council took the step following recent pollution of surrounding water and land within the sandfield by poisonous chemical substance and toxic waste allegedly deposited from activities of Indorama Eleme Petrochemical & Fertilizer Company Limited which led to the sudden death of fishes and other aquatic animals in the area.

The statement added that the chairman’s directive will give room for a thorough investigation into the matter so as to protect human lives and ensure that proper remediation exercise is carried out by certified professional bodies.
