Doctors call off strike in Rivers teaching hospital

By: Felix Ikpotor

Resident Doctors at the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital, RSUTH, has called off its indefinite strike action seven days after it joined its national body, NARD on the strike.

Resident doctors are expected to resume by 8 :00 am today (Monday).

President of the association at RSUTH, George Ela said the decision was taken at an emergency meeting of the association yesterday.

He explained that following their strike action, consultations were made and the legislative process for the domestication of the Residency Training Act has begun.

He also said the state government has promised to meet all of their demands.

PHSpectator reports that the Rivers State Government had lastweek threatened to implement a ‘no work, no pay’ rule against the doctors and also warned them that they were at risk of being sacked if they don’t resume work.

A statement which was signed  by the Secretary to State Government, Tammy Danagogo wondered why the doctors were going on strike when the government was not owing them.

The government also said it secured a injunction from a industrial court stopping the doctors from going on strike.
