APC Ward Congress: Scores injured as police disperse protesters in Rivers

Several persons including journalists were reportedly injured Wednesday at the All Progressives Congress, APC, State Secretariat along Woji Road, GRA in Port Harcourt following a protest by some aggrieved members of the party over the conduct of the ward congresses of the party.

Port Harcourt Spectator reports that some aggrieved members of the party loyal to Senator Magnus Abe blocked the party secretariat in Port Harcourt in protest, demanding that the committee set up by the National Secretariat should do what is right and fair to all parties.

The protesters alleged that a stakeholders meeting which ought to hold with members of the committee to agree on the modalities for screening did not take place.

They also alleged the congress materials for the election of Local Government Delegates were hijacked by party loyalists of former Transport Minister,  Chibuike Amaechi.

Mr Innocent Ajaelu, an aspirant of the State Assembly for Oyibo Constituency,  blamed the National Working Committee of the party for not reconciling the gladiators in the party.

“We have not been called for any stakeholders meeting, no aspirant list have been published, we have not seen any delegates list, our names are not there, we don’t know what they are doing so the national body should stop this crisis that is going on in this state,”he said.

The aggrieved protesters who blocked the state secretariat with different placards were later dispersed by gunshots fired directly at them by police officers.

Meanwhile, some journalists who engaged to cover the protest were said to have sustained several degrees of injuries, while others lost their midgets and other valuables.
