Soldiers raid community, cart away boat engines as gunmen kill travelers in Rivers

Six boat travellers have been reportedly killed on the old Calabar River while on their way to Port Harcourt from Bille Community in Degema Local Government Area of Rivers State.

Community sources said the killing occurred on Saturday morning, adding that four other persons sustained several degrees of injuries.

The sources said it was unclear if it was Nigerian Army’s personnel or criminals that carried out the shooting as soldiers and bunkerers regularly clashed in the area.

In the meantime, the people of Touma-Ama community, in Billle are now living in fear as some of them fled into the swamp for safety following the invasion of the community by personnel of the Nigerian Army.

Eyewitnesses said the soldiers invaded the village with ten gunboats in the early hours of Tuesday, 6th September, 2022.

It was also gathered that the operation which lasted for more than five hours, filled the atmosphere with tension with many casualties reportedly recorded as the residents took to their heels for safety.

A resident who pleaded anonymity said that the invaders carted away with boat engines and huge sum of money.
