Rivers NLC chairman calls for synergy between FG, states to implement new teachers’ salary structure

Following the new teachers’ salary structure announced by the federal government during this year’s Teachers Day celebration, Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Rivers State, Beatrice Itubo has called on the federal and state governments to synergise and set-up modalities to implement the new scheme.

Speaking in an interview, the state labour leader who appreciated the federal government for moving to increase the salaries of teachers said implementation is key.

“Are they going to implement it in the first place? Before, when the government mentioned it you see governor’s ganging up that they want to go to court. Now they have come back and are trying to bring it up. You see that when it’s finally accepted, maybe federal government would pay and states will start to battle again”.

“There should be a mercenary put in place, I want it that when these things are pronounced, the issues of salaries and wages are in exclusive list and it should not be that after it has been said then we begin to come and battle again. I am happy about it but is it implementable? Are these governors willing to pay? Even the minimum wage of thirty thousand naira, how many of them has paid?

She used the medium to call on workers who are shortchanged in the payment of salaries to write to the union formally.

PHSpectator recalls that the federal government had during the celebration announced the new salary scheme for teachers and also a new retirement age.
