Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Council, Barrister George Ariolu, has said that the council has commenced moves to tackle the flood situation around Rumuodomaya axis of the area by desilting the existing drains and channelling water to appropriate canals.
Ariolu made this known when he led a team of environmental and health workers to inspect a fish farm owned by one Mr Ukpong Jacob, operating in Rumuodomaya.
He said that the attention of the local government was drawn to the fish farm following investigations by the council’s Environmental Sanitation Committee.
According to reports, the fish farm, which is situated along Omachi Street, Rumuodomaya,was the major cause of the flood in the area.
Reacting to the situation, the chairman immediately ordered for the immediate investigation of the fish farm to trace the actual cause of the flood, advising residents within the area to constantly listen, monitor and heed to information coming from relevant units of government for the safety of their lives and property.
He further advised residents to be careful and desist from practices that could increase flooding.
Ariolu said the action was necessary in order to prepare for emergencies that may arise as a result of flood situations in the affected area.
The chairman, who was accompanied by the Leader of the Obio/Akpor Legislative Council, Rt. Hon. Prince Achor Nna; Deputy Leader of the council, Hon Jennifer Benson; and Chief Whip, Hon Edison Amadi; maintained that his administration would take proactive measures in facing and overcoming the challenges of the flooding experienced by residents.
According to him, residents must cooperate with government agencies to help tackle the issue of flooding on the area.
Meanwhile, Ariolu has decried the uncoordinated activities of commercial vehicle drivers and illegal trading around the council headquarters, saying they were major causes of traffic congestion in the area.
The council boss issuing the warning, urged commercial drivers to maintain sanity so as to decongest traffic in the area.
Similarly, the chairman said the uncoordinated activities of commercial drivers were constituting nuisance to commuters and vehicular movements.
The chairman, however, noted that the local government council would not treat lightly anyone apprehended by the law enforcement agencies for contributing to lawlessness and disorderliness in the area.
