The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in Rivers State has directed flood impacted schools in Ahoada West Local Government Area of the State to shut down until the flood recedes in the area.
The union said the directive followed the consent of the state government, adding that the level of the flood in the area is capable of drowning people.
The LGA chapter chairman of NUT, Ibe Omimi said, “the safest thing to do at this point is to ask all the flood impacted schools in Ahoada West to shut down.
“It is a big risk to allow teachers, pupils and students to come to school under such flood related circumstances.
“The flood in Ahoada West can drown human being and there is no how teachers, pupils and students can comfortably carryout academic activities in a school building that has been surrounded by flood.
“And to the best of my knowledge, I have not seen any government official coming to help mitigate the flood.”
The NUT chapter chairman also urged the state government to include flood break in the state school curriculum as it is in the Bayelsa State school curriculum.
Report has it that the schools in Jointkrama and other communities in Ahoada West had been ravaged by flood.
