The Rivers State Police Command says it has apprehended a suspected car snatcher, identified as Iruo Young, following a viral video that captured the theft of a Toyota Avalon at gunpoint in Choba, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of the state.
According to the Spokesperson of the Command, SP Grace Iringe-Koko who confirmed the arrest in a statement issued on Wednesday, said the suspect was traced and arrested by operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad after an intelligence-led investigation.
She said the stolen vehicle, which was snatched from its owner in broad daylight, was recovered from the suspect’s hideout in Ikokwu Spare Parts Market in Port Harcourt, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend other members of the gang currently at large.
She said during interrogation, the suspect voluntarily confesed to the crime, providing detailed information about his involvement in the crime.
The incident, which was widely circulated on social media, had sparked public outrage and renewed calls for improved security in the Choba axis, which hosts the University of Port Harcourt and several commercial hubs.
Police however, assured residents of sustained patrols and surveillance to prevent further criminal activities in the area.
She said the Commissioner of Police, Rivers State Command, CP Olatunji Disu, commended the operatives involved in the recovery and members of the public for sharing credible information that led to the arrest of the suspect.
Iringe-Koko said the CP further warned that the state would not provide a hiding place for criminsl, ephasizing the Command’s commitment to protecting lives and properties in the state.
