Chairman of Khana Local Government Area, Dr. Thomas Bariere, has announced new security measures, including a ban on motorcycle operations between 8:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m., as part of intensified efforts to address rising insecurity across the area.
The directive, which takes immediate effect, forms part of a broader strategy aimed at strengthening community-based intelligence gathering and enhancing collaboration between residents and security operatives.
Recall that a youth leader in the area, Barizaasi Donee was killed last Friday by yet to be known assailants at his home in Bionu Bangha. The killing comes barely a few weeks after a first class monarch, Mene Suanu Baridam, Menebua Bangha was shot by unknown gunmen in the area.
Addressing stakeholders at a press briefing, Dr. Bariere emphasized that security agencies have been directed to arrest and impound any motorcycle found operating after 8:00 p.m. within the Local Government Area.
The chairman noted that motorcycles have frequently been used to facilitate criminal activities, underscoring the need for stricter regulation and monitoring.
As part of the new measures, all motorcycle owners are required to register online with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Khana for proper documentation and tracking. Operators have been given two months from the date of the directive to comply. Failure to register will be treated as disobedience of a government security order.
The Chairman also advised residents to promptly report suspicious movements or activities to designated security contacts to enable swift intervention. In addition, the Council Chairman reiterated that individuals residing in various communities without any legitimate purpose are to vacate immediately.
He further directed youths and community leaders to assist in identifying and apprehending suspected criminals for handover to security agencies.
The Khana Council Chairman disclosed that Councilors, Community Development Committees (CDCs), Youth Presidents, and Chiefs will be held accountable if known suspects on security watchlists operate freely within their domains without being reported to the appropriate authorities. Officials who fail to cooperate with these security directives may face legal consequences, he said.
Bariere also stated that special attention has been placed on riverine and coastal communities within Khana LGA, including Opuoko, Kaa, Luubaara, Baen, Duburo, Bo-Ue, Bianu, Kalaoko, Gwara, Kpean, Teenama, Sii, Kono, Wiiyaakara, and Beeri.
Residents in these areas have been advised to monitor and report suspicious boat movements across waterways to facilitate a rapid security response.
The Chairman reaffirmed the Local Government’s commitment to restoring peace and stability across Khana LGA, calling for unity and vigilance among residents.
“These measures are not punitive but preventive. Security is a collective responsibility, and together we must protect our communities,” the statement concluded.
